Abstract:

Includes materials about the organization's efforts throughout the U.S. to affect policy relating to Franco in Spain. Also includes material relating to Northern California Committee members and activities. Correspondents in the collection include Frieda Wolff, Chairperson of the CDS; Milton Wolff; and others. In addition to correspondence, the collection includes press releases, flyers, newsletters, lobbying materials, documents relating to the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and its 40th Anniversary Dinner. There is also one file of materials relating to Dolores Ibarruri, a prominent orator of the Spanish Civil War, at her 80th birthday celebration in 1975 in Rome and materials relating to the creation of Abe Oberoff's 1974 documentary "Dreams and Nightmares" on the Spanish military bases sold to Franco by Nixon.

The Committee for a Democratic Spain (CDS) was founded around 1960 by Freda Kirchwey and other Americans interesting in lobbying for and promoting policies and interventions that would loosen Franco's grip on Spain. The CDS had chapters in various parts of the United States.
